Hi there!

Hi there guys! It's been ages, I know, but I just couldn't resist the urge to revisit this space and wish you all a wonderful Christmas. So, how are you? Still reading blogs, still striving to lead a simpler, more balanced and minimalist life? Me too, although it's been challenging this year. Life has been very unpredictable with Mum's rapid health decline and my sporadic supply teaching but both situations have settled down as we reach the end of 2018. Mum has Alzheimer's and vascular dementia and since October has been living permanently in a care home which is less than a ten minute drive from here. This is a situation which I never would have imagined happening but she is happy and settled and has little memory of her family home and so is not distressed. I'm adjusting to losing my mum as she is now a shadow of her previous self and I often feel sad and frustrated that I can't make life more enjoyable and less confusing for her. Since September I have been teaching full-time at the school which I left in 2017 - I feel very fortunate to have a permanent full-time teaching job again and the stability, familiarity and structure it provides is just what I need. Yes, it's hard work and full-on but I've worked hard to improve my organisation, focus and perspective and it's been a good term.

Mum's illness has a silver lining as it's brought the family closer together and I feel very supported by my family. It's also woken me up to realising that life is for living and that self-care is something that I want to work on. For the first year ever I'm actually looking forward to the new year more than Christmas as I'm feeling keen and brave enough to make some changes. This year has been draining in so many ways and I feel that I need to stream more calm into my life and those around me. Which brings me to a thought that's been bubbling away in my brain: that blogging is one of the quietest but most powerful platforms out there. I'm so grateful to those who still blog and those that read blogs. I hope to blog when I can in 2019.

Wishing you all a restful Christmas and I hope to see you here in 2019. Thanks for the Christmas messages from friends made through this blog - you know who you are. Love to you all xo

  1. Lovely to hear from you and Merry Christmas to you too. I started a blog, earlier this summer, after a life changing happy house move...but I am finding it hard to keep the impetus going to blog on a regular basis.

  2. I agree so much about blogging and both the voice and community it can create and foster. The world is a smaller place. Peace to you in 2019. I will read when you write but please stop by my blog when the mood strikes.

  3. So good to hear from you, Claire! I have recently started blogging again too. I missed the community, and it's been fun to be back. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I've been the opposite of you, with teaching--after teaching full time for 15 years, I have just switched to part-time substitute teaching.

I look forward to reading more of your posts! :-)

  5. Claire, I am new to your blog and am very happy to have found it. I'm so sorry your mother's health is in decline, but working on self-care is probably one of the best tributes to her and something she would have wanted for her loving daughter.
I hope you find your place of rest this Christmas season and throughout the new year.

  9. A lovely post Claire. Good to hear your news. Sorry about your Mum's condition, but glad you feel supported and focused. I very much feel the pull of simple, even though in someways things are not! But I also feel the new year calling in new ways. maybe one day I will blog again too, maybe, maybe...anyway, take care, all the best for 2019. X

  10. Lovely to hear from you again. I have kind of lost the blogging habit too, posting only occasionally. I agree with your comments about the blogging community and the support it can provide. I'd love to see more posts from you so I hope you do find the time. Full time teaching is tough especially if you are also busy with your mum. Take care!

  12. A happpy new year from Switzerland, too!
This seems to be the time of our lives, my sympathy about your mum, we had Granny at Richmond Hall for 9 mths before we lost her aged 100, also with vascular dementia, it's very sad. Then having to clear and sell the house, I was so glad I'd decluttered my little holiday home in Brittany and could take some of her much-loved things. One friend has given up her job to care for her mum with dementia (near you) and is very frustrated, another flies back and forth to keep an eye on hers, same story everywhere as women lovingly make sacrifices for their mothers. My husband, too, cared full time for his mother for six months before she died, now there's a lot for us to do; gratitude that we reduced our own "stuff" over the years and have the time and space to be able to deal with it all!
Blogging has fallen by the wayside for me somewhat but I keep checking and reading when I can. I hope to get back to mine soon, where to even begin when so much has gone on? Well done to you for picking it up again and documenting your Christmas!!
(I have started making books of my blog for myself to keep!)

    1. So lovely to hear from you and thank you for your kind and supportive words. Mum's illness has really opened my eyes to how widespread dementia is, which is devastating, and also to the kindness of others reaching out to Mum and us, her family. I've just caught up with your blog and had a very enjoyable read and loved hearing about your grandchildren. All the best for 2019 x
