Changing Rooms (Second-hand)

I've had such fun buying second-hand items for Mum's new bedroom in her care home. Almost everything I've bought is second-hand but I shopped mindfully making sure that everything was reasonably priced and good quality. Nothing was over £10 and I've only bought things that have 'sparked joy'. Mum's due to move this week and last week I took photos of everything I've bought before I dropped them off. Unfortunately, I can't go into the home at the moment due to a positive covid case so the staff will be getting her room ready for her instead of me. It's got a lilac and purple colour theme which is much more suitable for a bedroom than the rust decor of her current room. Finding a cushion for £1.49 in a charity shop set me off on a second-hand hunt for other items. And then thrifting the butterfly cushion (seen in the first photo) inspired a butterfly theme. Let me show you what else will go in her room. There are several more butterfly themed items all found in local charity shops. The watercolour painting with the butterfly and the buddleia might have been in a local art exhibition as on the back it has the name and address of the artist and original price (£35).

I got most of the items from charity shops but couldn't find any bedding that I liked. I found 3 sets of bedding on Ebay that I liked all priced below £10 (including postage) and in good condition. I washed all the bedding sets and even ironed them. Mum would be impressed as I definitely don't share her love of ironing. Only one set came with a fitted bottom sheet so I did buy 2 new bottom sheets and pillowcases to complete the sets. I'm sure not everyone would want to buy second-hand bedding (my husband says he doesn't want any for our bedroom) but the ones I've bought aren't very worn and looked clean when they arrived. If you stay in a hotel or self-catering the bedding is effectively in the same condition as second-hand. Also, I appreciate that not everyone can afford to buy new. I'd be interested to hear your views.

A few more pretty decorations found in charity shops.

This stylish lamp was originally from Next before it was donated to a charity shop. It's not my usual style but I've loved finding such pretty and feminine touches for Mum.

This last item from Ebay is not lilac or butterfly related but it's very cute. So cute that I named him Darwin and almost kept him. I know Mum will love him. I had a zebra doorstop (Ziggy) in my last classroom (it had a jungle theme) and that's now in our lounge. He's loving the peace and quiet of home life.

I hope Mum settles in well and that you've enjoyed seeing all her new second-hand things. She already has personal items like photos and a special Victorian side table from my grandparents' home in her current room but it was great to be able to shop for things to make her new room extra calm and welcoming. Buying everything second-hand was also very satisfying. It's always worth considering second-hand before buying new when you need something for your home.

  1. I am very happy to buy second hand bedding if it is in good condition. Several of my bed sets have come from charity shops where I've worked or volunteered and are much better quality than I would buy myself, usually coming from stores such as John Lewis. Once washed, they don't seem any different to new.

    1. I totally agree - you can buy more expensive/better quality bedding for less and in fantastic condition if you buy second-hand.

  2. How beautiful your Mums room will be - and what loving care and attention you've shown in your choices. I think it is a sign of the times that people won't consider 2nd hand. As we've just downsized for retirement, I passed on beds and bedding to a local housing charity. A family member was appalled and said couldn't understand how anyone sleep with pre-used bed/linen. I was tempted to say "if it was that or a sleeping bag in a doorway, I imagine many people would disagree with you"! It is far better for the planet for us to get maximum use from our resources. I hope your Mum settles quickly - and it's not too long before you can visit properly.

    1. Thanks Angela some great points and it's lovely to hear from you. Donating what you can in good condition is important to help support charities and there should be no shame in buying second-hand bedding.

  3. I would buy second hand bedding, as you say it's no different to staying in a hotel. Great purchases, the room will look lovely.

  4. You have bought lovely things for your Mum's room and I think it will all be very nice together. You have obviously chosen things thoughtfully with a lot of care. I remember an elderly friend moving to a home with such a basic room, but it ended up looking really rather nice and inviting because her friends all rallied round to make it comfy for her. It made a big difference.

I used to feel 'no way' about second hand bedding but I currently can't afford new. I got two sets of very pretty and comfy duvets and pillow cases, washed them well and just got on with it. People do sleep routinely on bedding used by many people in hotels and hospitals. My old bedding is much more comfortable than my daughter's scratchy and hard new set, so I would buy more definitely.

Lilac and butteries are two of my favourite things, I hope your Mum settles in well and feels comfy and cosy with her nice new things around her.

    1. Hi Sara, I think buying second-hand bedding is a good choice for many reasons. I couldn't afford to buy new for Mum as she's self funding her care and I thought it would be a waste of her money to buy brand new. Also, I know she'd approve as she was a seasoned charity shop customer and had great taste. I'm glad you like the lilac and butterfly theme and that I was able to share it.

  5. I think your shopping t rips for your Mum have yielded some lovely treasures and I love the care and thought you have put into it all making it so carely curated for her, it's going to make her new room seem so pretty and I'm sure she will appreciate all your thoughtfulness.

As for secondhand bedding, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it at all! As most bedding is washed on higher temperatures anyway it's going to be lovely and fresh by the time it's on your Mum's bed. As you say it's no different to sleeping on hotel sheets or staying in someone else's house overnight ... and it's so much better for the environment to buy slightly used things in preference to new things, which usually come wrapped in plastic as well.

  6. How To Get Your Ex Lover/Partner/Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Wife Or Husband Back

I was married for 16 years to a loving mother and wife. We had 2 children together who are now 11 & 13. I reconnected with an old girlfriend from college on Facebook and we began an affair and I left my wife. The woman I had an affair with is a wonderful woman and I love her too and our kids had begun accepting the situation and my wife has kind of moved on, but not in love with the man she is seeing. I thought I fell out of love with my wife and I felt terrible about what I did to her - she is a good woman and I don't know what came over me. I decided to try and get her back and I was recommended to Lord Zakuza for help to get reunited with my wife and within 48 hours after I made contact with Lord Zakuza my wife decided to work things out with me and now we are back together with our children living as one happy family. I really don't know the words to use in appreciation of what Lord Zakuza did for me but I will say thank you sir for reuniting I and my family back. For those in trying times with their marriages or relationship can communicate with LORD ZAKUZA through the below information's.
